INTRODUCTORY ASHIATSU - POSTERIOR & ANTERIOR

This is an intensive, entry level Ashiatsu Course. There is no pre-requisite required. 3 days, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Upon completion of this course, therapists will learn skills and techniques to offer a complete, effective, 90 minute protocol of Posterior and Anterior Ashiatsu from seated and standing positions. The initial intent of the course is to offer a safer, gentler approach to working deeper tissue while protecting the shoulders, elbows, wrists, and hands of therapists, and provide a more comfortable, effective, and relaxing session for clients.
This modality takes longer than others to learn for many reasons, including that balance & coordination levels are much more exhausted during the initial learning process, making regular practice the avenue to progress. Each student will learn to replace their “hand tools” with their “foot tools” in their own time. Once a therapist has experience using their new tools, they will be able to offer further therapeutic advancements, including providing a lighter pressure full body treatment when desired. (Specific courses are available upon graduation and practice of this Introductory Course).
It’s always difficult to be a beginner at something, and especially when what you’re learning to do with your new tools is something you already do very well. Regardless of fitness level, massage experience, and ability, this modality requires an extremely high mental and physical exertion during class. Literally, it is like learning to drive a car with your feet! Please be patient with yourself and your class mates, and remind yourself that you are in the learning phase.
Each person in attendance must be able to give and receive, equal time.
If you are pregnant, or trying to get pregnant, have had any kind of implant within the last nine months, or have a contraindication/injury/disability that will inhibit your ability to do either, we regret to inform you that you cannot attend the seminar. We will be happy to welcome you back after you have recovered. WARNING: If you are late to class or back from breaks, everyone else will be late & we will not be able to finish on time; please be prepared & ready!
No garments/undergarments are permitted for the receiving therapist during their initial learning practical.
Women on their menstrual cycles need to be prepared so that their student partner may practice without the interference of undergarments; all students will need to comply with this requirement to learn proper palpation and draping techniques during class.
Draping is a major part of learning this technique.
Each student will be draped and learn to drape in a “half drape” or “vertical” drape, opposed to conservative draping techniques taught in most schools.
Feedback is absolutely necessary.
You & your student partner will need to communicate verbally and physically. No one should receive uncomfortable, painful, or too much pressure without stopping the working therapist. It is difficult to control pressure in the learning process, but becomes easier with practice. Patience with yourself and your class mates is essential!
What To Wear To Class
What you choose to wear in your sessions is up to you. For classes, we recommend you dress in layers. When you’re learning and getting used to standing on the table, expect to sweat. It’s a good idea to have something warmer for note taking time, and something cooler for “feet – on” time.
Whatever tights/bottoms/pants/shorts you choose, please be sure they are comfortable to sit & stretch in. Long length or capris are acceptable, without “bell bottoms” or loose/hanging material/strings at the bottom cuff. Male students do well with basketball shorts, or “gym wear.”
Footwear is important!
A closed-toed slipper/shoe is mandatory to keep feet soft, warm, and sanitary, while a pair of slip-ons/flip flops is needed for when your feet have oil on them, during the working part of your session. PLEASE BRING BOTH TO CLASS. Disposable flip flops are fine, but you must have clean, sanitized flip flops/slip ons AND closed toe shoes/slippers for class. You’ll want to use the same for clients, too!
Please do not come to class unless you have prepared your feet! Soft, clean, and pedicured feet are a must! This doesn’t mean you have to go out and pay for a professional one; you may do a pedicure yourself at home, just be sure to come to class with:
short, filed toe nails
soft, filed heels
soft, filed pads (balls of the feet-the entire width of the foot)
shaved/clipped leg hair (If you currently shave your legs, you will need to shave each day to avoid secondary contact that is stubbly; if you have longer leg hair, you may need to clip it shorter).

You may bring 1 set for yourself and reuse them each day. You must have 1 clean set per Guest Client.

Shoes are a requirement! One closed toe, warm pair & One slip on/flip flop, preferably washable. (see above)
Other items to bring: Snacks, Meals, Water, Drinks, Pens/Pencils, Paper/notebook, vitamins/medications needed, camera/phone & chargers, measurements for treatment room/building information, and anything else that helped you get through your massage school days! Bringing at least the 4 oz size of OIL, CREAM, LOTION, or GEL allowed on flights is recommended & appreciated.
DEPOSIT & REFUND POLICY
To reserve a spot in this workshop, you will need to send in the required deposit for your enrolled course(s), Liability Waiver, & Registration Form. Because this is a tuition based course, we prefer deposits to be paid with checks. Credit cards will be accepted but will add 3.5% to the total being charged. You may bring the balance to class in cash, check, money order, or credit card.
There are no refunds on deposits. Only in the event of proper documentation of injury, death in the immediate family, or weather prohibiting travel, will the option for tuition to be rolled over into a workshop at a later date be open to you. This special consideration will be allowed one time only, and will cost $50.00. There are no refunds once class has been taken.
Bare Your Sole, LLC will refund all money for any cancelled seminar due to its responsibility. If minimum enrollment numbers are not met, the class would be considered a private class. A private would not fall under the guidelines of the listed tuition price and each workshop would increase by $100 per student. If registration is low enough to cancel class you will be notified 2 weeks prior to the scheduled dates. At such time, students can choose:
A) If they would like a 100% refund. B) Roll their deposit over to another class with no penalty C) Take advantage of the private training.
This course has A LOT of bodywork to get through. Please bring any comforts you may need. (Essential oils, pick-me-ups, drinks, snacks, teas, and lots of water).
Day 1 & 2 = 2 ½-3 hour sessions of bodywork for each person, each day –this time includes the five and ten minute breaks we’ll take every 45 minutes on the tables. PREPARE to “toga” during the table breaks. There will not be enough time to get dressed and undressed with some of the breaks on the first two days. You will need to wrap up in your top sheet to sit up and walk around. Another great reason to bring the recommended smaller sheets! Lava Lavas or “island style” cover ups work great for a top sheet & cover up; robes that you can pack easily will be great as well.
Day 3 = Notes, Work on Instructor, Guest Client Practical
If you all choose to take shorter breaks throughout the day, and take no more than 40 minutes for lunch, then class will end closer to 5/5:15 p.m. each day. This means you need to bring food for the day to class. If you have to leave to p/u food, it will take longer than 40 minutes for you to eat & rest enough to continue and end class by 5/5:15.
You all may communicate about sharing rides, rooms, rental cars, and taking turns bringing/picking up food for class. Emails to the group will be sent three weeks prior and again the week before class. You can “reply all” to ask any questions about the above.
There is a refrigerator, an oven, stove, microwave, & toaster oven on site for your use. You are welcome to use the back/front yard, kitchen, dining area, & studio table for your breaks and lunch.
Partners for class are primarily chosen by height. This helps to keep time changing the height of tables to a minimum. You are welcome to keep the same partners or change partners on Days 1 & 2. While feedback is important, please do stop the feedback and listen to instructions when given, then continue. It helps the whole class to be on the same technique and conversation at the same time. Avoiding confusion will be essential, as standing ~on~ the tables confuses things enough for most people taking this class.
